An Taoiseach Enda Kenny officially launched the Mayo Medical Academy on the grounds of Mayo University Hospital which will provide training facilities for student doctors of the National University of Ireland, Galway.
The project involved the restoration and conversion of the former St. Mary’s Church to providing flexible open plan teaching spaces while preserving the character and nature of the original building. The original internal space was transformed with rooflights and underground ventilation ducts to provide natural light and ventilation. Modern insertions such as the first floor are separated on all sides from the stone walls to differentiate old and new.
The Taoiseach described the project ‘as an utter transformation of an existing church to a modern teaching facility’ and the sheep’s wool teaching pods as a ‘very conjunctive way to the modern way of teaching’.
